How to Overcome Failure

Edited by Carmyelle

Failure is a given in life; expecting to sail through without a hiccup is unrealistic and sets you up to fall harder when failure does happen. Avoiding failure also prevents you from focusing on gaining the resiliency needed to cope with it, a vital element of bouncing back.

It is unfortunate that in societies obsessed with success and achievement, failure can be made to feel like the worst thing that could ever happen to a person. The reality is that failure is commonplace but so is overcoming it and pushing through to more successful endeavors in the future. Even where a failure cannot be salvaged, there is always something to be learned from it. In this article, you’ll learn a little about how to overcome failure through having the right attitude. When you don’t let the mishaps of life keep you down too long, then nobody else will be able to keep you down too long either.

7 Surefire Ways to Fail at Everything That Matters in Life

  By Trevor Wilson

(This post is part of the Friday Night Kick in the Ass series.)

How’s your track record looking these days? Have you been smashing your goals left and right? Kicking ass and taking names?

If so, then you can just skip this post. You’ll find nothing here you don’t already know.

But if your track record isn’t so great, then you may just want to read on. There’s a multitude of reasons for why you haven’t been achieving your goals. They can range from simple procrastination to long held limiting beliefs.

So what do you do?

Well, there are a ton of books and blogs that will teach you all the things necessary to succeed in every area of life. But the truth is there are many paths that lead to the same destination. What works for one may not work for another.

But there are certain habits that always lead to failure. Sometimes, it makes a little more sense to just focus on what not to do. Once you recognize and remove these success killers from your life, you’ll find yourself well on the road to meaningful achievement.

1. Never Getting Started – This is easily the biggest success killer out there. Everyday, millions of dreams go to waste simply because the dreamer just couldn’t get started. There are a thousand and one reasons why someone might fail to even begin:

Procrastination. Overwhelm. Insecurity. Belief that you’re not capable enough. Not smart enough. Not worthy. Getting bogged down in research leading to information overload. Poor time management. Making decisions based on others expectations of you. Fear.

Each reason needs to be dealt with in its own right, so you’d better find out which ones are holding you back and fucking deal with them. Because you will never be able to get started until you do.

And never even trying is the biggest failure of all.

2. Taking Bad Advice – This one seems so obvious, but many people have crashed and burned simply from taking poor advice. I’ve seen this a hundred times in the fitness industry. Scrawny trainers weighing all of a buck-twenty doling out muscle building advice to the kid who wants to look like Arnold.

I can’t tell who’s more delusional, the sickly trainer who thinks he knows what he’s talking about, or the eager kid hanging onto his every word.

Just ‘cause someone talks the talk doesn’t mean they’ve walked the walk.

Be selective in who you listen to. If they haven’t achieved what you want to achieve then just give ‘em the hand. Better yet, give ‘em the finger. Then go find advice elsewhere.

3. Looking for Instant Success – This one really pisses me off. And it’s becoming more and more common with each succeeding generation. I suppose it’s inevitable with all the advancements in technology, but it’s a growing flaw in character nonetheless.

Or maybe I’m just an old grump. Who knows?

What I can tell you is that there is no instant success. At least, not when it comes to true success. True success comes from putting in the work . . . sometimes years worth. It’s all about paying your dues.

I hope that concept doesn’t frighten you. But if it does, you’d better just get the fuck over it. Because if you’re unwilling to do the work; if you’re too lazy to put in the hours and the effort; then just forget it. Don’t even bother. Go back to your video games. Leave success to those who actually want it. Those who are willing to earn it.

4. Majoring in the Minors – I’ll confess, I’ve been guilty of this one on more than a few occasions. It’s just so damn easy to get caught up in all the little details while losing sight of the bigger picture.

But if you ever want to get shit done, then you need to step back and figure out what really matters. Don’t waste your time focusing on the menial tasks. Do the big things. The things that bring real payoff.

This goes back to the 80/20 rule. If you spend 80% of your time knockin’ down the important tasks, success is virtually assured. That means you need to learn to prioritize. Figure out what matters most . . . then go after it like a motherfuckin’ madman.

5. Never Upping Your Game – This is what separates the men from the boys. The pros from the amateurs. The successful from the mediocre. It’s that next step so many fail to take.

Too often we become complacent. We get comfortable with the minor level of achievement we’ve made and never take it any further. We tell ourselves we’re happy with what we’ve accomplished.

If that’s true, then great, by all means remain where you are. But more often than not it’s just a lie we tell ourselves to hide the truth . . . that we’re stuck. And we’re unwilling to do what it takes to move up to the next level.

Well fuck that.

If you are looking to reach the top – looking for true success and mastery – then you need to pop your little safety bubble, smash through your comfort zone, and break free of the belief that good enough is good enough.

Because it isn’t. Not if you’re seeking real achievement. You need to get better. You know it. So step up and just fucking do it!

6. Assuming You Know it All – This often goes hand in hand with number 5. It’s just another means of remaining stuck. And it comes with a certain smugness that makes me want to slap someone. There is always something more to learn. Always.

Don’t ever believe for a minute that you’re the shit. You’re not. Someone out there is better than you, whether you want to believe it or not. Instead of keeping your eyes closed to the possibility, be thankful for it. It means that you can still improve. You can still grow.

In the end, know-it-alls know nothing. Their very nature ensures it.

7. Giving Up – This is the saddest one of all. While never even starting may be the biggest dream killer out there, giving up is the worst. You managed to get started, you put in some time and effort, you may have even given it your best . . . then what? Things didn’t turn out as you had planned?

Well no shit. Do they ever?

So things were harder than you thought they’d be. Times got tough. You were putting in twice the work you’d anticipated, but getting only half the results. It just doesn’t seem to be paying off.

And now you’re not sure whether you should continue on. Maybe it was just a crazy dream in the first place. You’ve had enough. Time to quit.

Just fucking quit.

Congratulations. You’ve fallen pray to the worst habit out there. Quitting. And don’t delude yourself; quitting is a habit. It’s a choice you make over and over. And the more you make it, the easier it gets. You’ll soon find yourself quitting at the first signs of challenge . . . any challenge. Whatsoever.

The quitter’s nature is what defines life’s true failures. The inability to persist. A lack of determination. Always taking the easy way out.

Think I’m talking out of my ass? Then you’d better read this post and this post. And I’d also throw in this one for good measure.

Believe me, I know that quitter mentality. I know it inside and out. I’ve lived it for too much of my own life. All those wasted years. Gone. Fucking gone. And for what? Momentary comfort? A smooth ride? Avoidance of fear?

What a fucking joke.

Don’t ever quit. It makes you weak. It makes you small. It steals the strength and power that are yours by right. You must persist. You must see it through. All the way to it’s bloody fucking end.

Never give up. It’s the worst failure of all.

8. Bonus Tip – Failing is a part of life. If you’re not regularly failing at something or another, that simply means you’re not trying anything new. You’re not pushing your boundaries. You’re not testing your limits.

But there’s a HUGE difference between failing and being a failure. More often than not, the failure doesn’t fail at anything . . . because he attempts nothing. He just sits on his ass all day long content to let life pass him by. There’s another term for this kind of person: loser.

Don’t be a loser.

Go ahead and do shit. Fail. Fail often. Fail spectacularly. Failing is no big deal. But people act like it’s the fucking plague.

Just be sure to learn from your failures. If you can manage that, then it was never really a failure in the first place . . . just a lesson in disguise.

So which of these faults are holding you back? More importantly, what are you going to do about them?

p.s. If you found any value in this post — if it struck a chord or even just made you think for a moment — then I’d appreciate it if you hit some of those share buttons. In fact, I’d more than appreciate it . . . I’d fucking love it!

Life After Failure March 27, 2013

By Joe Marchelewski

The hardest part of life is failure, other than death of course. Failure is something that has plagued mankind since the beginning. Even in the Bible, Adam had to deal with his own failings while still protecting and caring for his family.

George Bernard Shaw, the great Irish playwright, once said “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent in doing nothing.”

It’s easy to give up on an endeavor, a person or a situation as failure, or failures, mount. But, if we allow failures to stop us then we should completely throw away any notion of success, development and hope.

Failures are our learning opportunities, even if it’s a major failure. Failed marriages can teach us things about ourselves and our desires that we didn’t know before. Failed attempts at losing weight can allow us to figure out how our bodies work. And in truth, history is filled with people who achieved great things in part because they failed so much.

  • FailureJ. Paul Getty was an extremely wealthy and successful man, yet was married and divorced more than five times. His business success and acumen wasn’t something he could bring into his personal life.
  • Abraham Lincoln lost multiple elections and was often berated for his stances against slavery.
  • Jim Plunkett, who led two Raiders teams to victories in the Super Bowl was considered a failure during his days as a quarterback with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.

Dealing with failure is hard, it’s not easy to look into the mirror after a terrible loss and try and believe that success is possible. It’s easy to use all sorts of cheesy sounding sayings and terms and then let failure sit in your belly. What’s difficult is taking time to examine your failure, learn from it and fight to get over your fear of it.

We’ve all been dumped, fired, yelled at, fallen down during a big event, allowed a bad habit to get the better of us and simply failed at something that seemed easy. However, if we’re going to succeed in life, achieve our goals and do anything of merit, than we have to allow these things to make us stronger.

How Do I Move Forward after Living a Life of Failure?

by Manal Ghosain

The title of this article comes from a question I received recently from a reader.

At first I wanted to respond to him privately. As I was contemplating the message, I realized that this would be of benefit to other readers as well. Focusing on failure is thematic amongst a lot of us humans.

This by no means is a comprehensive guide on dealing with failure. It’s a practical (i.e. short) guide on recognizing past failures and starting to move forward.

How can we move forward when we feel we’ve failed on so many levels?

To answer this question, we’ll need to look at two things: past failures and moving forward.

What failure means

Think of the word failure and go with the feelings that come up. When I think of it I feel a tightness, discomfort, and pain. It’s not pleasant.

But why do we feel this way?

I think it’s a conditioned response that builds up over the years till it becomes automatic. Once we view something as a failure, we feel pain and then we want to avoid it at all costs.

The conditioning is different for each one of us based on our upbringing, situation, and  experiences. Unfortunately, most of the time though we end up in the same place—hating failure and avoiding any action that can potentially lead to more failure.

Failure is the opposite of success. It embodies disappointment, things not working out our way, and unfavorable (if not humiliating) outcomes.

Failure and the bottom line

The thing with failure is: it’s results based.

A lot of the time we view any outcome that doesn’t meet our expectations to be a failure. And we forget the experience itself. By focusing on the outcome, we ignore the most important part—the experience that got us to that outcome.

The journey itself is where all the lessons and growth lie. The end result is the icing on the cake. So it shouldn’t matter as much.

Even if we view an entire experience as a failure, we can’t know for sure what’s going to come next. And the failure might turn into a stepping-stone for another, more rewarding experience.

The harsh critic

It’s easier for us to forgive others than to forgive ourselves. Our view of reality when it comes to ourselves is more distorted. We don’t like what we perceive as our failures, probably more than any other person.

The harsh critic within thrives on failure. It feeds and dwells on our mistakes or absence of success.

Blurring the line

With time, we become our mistakes and failures. We don’t fail. We are a failure and that’s where we trap ourselves.

If we think we’re a failure, we’re going to attract and create what supports our thoughts. We always find what we’re looking for. And we keep feeding the self-made failure monster.

You are not your mistakes or the success you achieve. The end result is just an outcome. It shouldn’t take away from the richness (pleasant or unpleasant) of the experience.

If you feel that you’ve had a lot of failure in your life, reflect on the following questions. You’ll realize that you’re more successful than you thought.

Are you still alive? If you are, then you are not a failure. You’re succeeding at the biggest game by breathing and being here.

Did you learn to walk? Type? Read? Communicate? You have succeeded at very important skills that help you tremendously every day of your life.

Did you smile? Laughed hard, from the belly? Offered or received an act of kindness? You have changed the energy of the world to the better with your acts.

Did you (or still do) take care of yourself? Cared for family, a plant/garden or pet? You are nourishing life with every act and if that’s not success, what is?

Have you ever paid for a cup of coffee or a meal or a service? Have you received any compensation for any work you’ve done? You moved the economy along in more ways than you realize.

Have you ever loved or been loved—even if it didn’t last? You have changed the chemistry and the heart of life.

Did you forgive anyone for his/her mistakes or failures? You have helped heal the world.

These are just a few questions to remind you of how rich your life is. You’ve had a lot of successful experiences. You just don’t think about them because most of the times we take these things for granted.

Exercising your imagination

If you still view your life as one of failure, take a few moments and do this exercise.

Close your eyes and imagine that you are out of your body. You’re sitting on a cloud but can still see your body perfectly. Imagine now the body going through the experiences that you determined were a failure. Observe without judgment. What would you see?

Did this person do the best they can at that point? Did they mean well? Did they do it with an open heart?

Send love and compassion to your physical body. Do you see the person as a human being going through a journey the best they know how? Or do you still think they’re failing?

After questioning and reviewing your experiences, you should be able to open up to the possibility that what you perceive as failure may not be that bad after all.

Moving forward

We all make mistakes or fail to get the results we want sometimes. It doesn’t matter. We can always pick ourselves up and start again.

To move forward you need to do one simple thing: start moving. Just take one step in the direction that serves you best.

Zoom in – Determine the area of your life where you want to move forward—a relationship, career, health, finances, where you live … etc.

View – Spend a few minutes (or more) visualizing and thinking about what would it take for you to get started.

Act – Take the first step. If it’s too daunting, split it into smaller parts and do one of the parts. Once done, move on to the next step.

A couple of examples:

A new relationship: If you want to pursue a new relationship, join a dating site as a first step. Next, work on your profile, third take a picture & upload it, fourth look around for people who might be of interest to you.

Finances: If you want to work on your finances, determine the most important bills you need to take care of right now. If you have many, just pick one. Can you pay it? If not, can you call and arrange for a payment plan? If not, look at the next bill and do the same. If there are so many and it’s a mess, look for a financial adviser and book an appointment.

You get the picture. One tiny step then the next one and the one after. It’s a slow process and you may feel discouraged if you don’t get results right away.

But no matter how small the steps are you’re moving forward.

A couple of articles from the archives that I hope can assist in moving forward and taking action:

  • Finding Peace in Failure: A Simple Approach to Moving Forward
  • The Next Thing: A Simple Approach to Action and Getting Things Done

If you try the above and you still feel stuck, look within for any other fears (other than failure) lingering in the background.

Failure is not as bad as we’re conditioned to believe. It’s part of a life well lived—a journey of ups and downs and everything in between.

I’ll leave you with a few words of wisdom about failure from people we respect and admire.

“My reputation grows with every failure.” ~George Bernard Shaw

“There is no failure except in no longer trying. There is no defeat except from within, no really insurmountable barrier save our own inherent weakness of purpose.” ~ Kin Hubbard

“Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.” ~John Wooden

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” ~Michael Jordan

“Remember that failure is an event, not a person.” ~Zig Ziglar

“I don’t believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.” ~Oprah Winfrey

Reasons Small Businesses Fail January 6, 2011

One of the least understood aspects of entrepreneurship is why small businesses fail, and there’s a simple reason for the confusion: Most of the evidence comes from the entrepreneurs themselves.

I have had a close-up view of numerous business failures — including a few start-ups of my own. And from my observation, the reasons for failure cited by the owners are frequently off-point, which kind of makes sense when you think about it. If the owners really knew what they were doing wrong, they might have been able to fix the problem. Often, it’s simply a matter of denial or of not knowing what you don’t know.

In many cases, the customers — or, I should say, ex-customers — have a better understanding than the owners of what wasn’t working. The usual suspects that the owners tend to blame are the bank, the government, or the idiot partner. Rarely does the owner’s finger point at the owner. Of course, there are cases where something out of the owner’s control has gone terribly wrong, but I have found those instances to be in the minority. What follows — based on my own experiences and observations — are my top 10 reasons small businesses fail. The list is not pretty, it is not simple, and it does not contain any of those usual suspects (although they might come in at Nos. 11, 12 and 13).

1. The math just doesn’t work. There is not enough demand for the product or service at a price that will produce a profit for the company. This, for example, would include a start-up trying to compete against Best Buy and its economies of scale.

2. Owners who cannot get out of their own way. They may be stubborn, risk adverse, conflict adverse — meaning they need to be liked by everyone (even employees and vendors who can’t do their jobs). They may be perfectionist, greedy, self-righteous, paranoid, indignant, or insecure. You get the idea. Sometimes, you can even tell these owners the problem, and they will recognize that you are right — but continue to make the same mistakes over and over.

3. Out-of-control growth. This one might be the saddest of all reasons for failure — a successful business that is ruined by over-expansion. This would include moving into markets that are not as profitable, experiencing growing pains that damage the business, or borrowing too much money in an attempt to keep growth at a particular rate. Sometimes less is more.

4. Poor accounting. You cannot be in control of a business if you don’t know what is going on. With bad numbers, or no numbers, a company is flying blind, and it happens all of the time. Why? For one thing, it is a common — and disastrous — misconception that an outside accounting firm hired primarily to do the taxes will keep watch over the business. In reality, that is the job of the chief financial officer, one of the many hats an entrepreneur has to wear until a real one is hired.

5. Lack of a cash cushion. If we have learned anything from this recession (I know it’s “over” but my customers don’t seem to have gotten the memo), it’s that business is cyclical and that bad things can and will happen over time — the loss of an important customer or critical employee, the arrival of a new competitor, the filing of a lawsuit. These things can all stress the finances of a company. If that company is already out of cash (and borrowing potential), it may not be able to recover.

6. Operational mediocrity. I have never met a business owner who described his or her operation as mediocre. But we can’t all be above average. Repeat and referral business is critical for most businesses, as is some degree of marketing (depending on the business).

7. Operational inefficiencies. Paying too much for rent, labor, and materials. Now more than ever, the lean companies are at an advantage. Not having the tenacity or stomach to negotiate terms that are reflective of today’s economy may leave a company uncompetitive.

8. Dysfunctional management. Lack of focus, vision, planning, standards and everything else that goes into good management. Throw fighting partners or unhappy relatives into the mix, and you have a disaster.

9. The lack of a succession plan. We’re talking nepotism, power struggles, significant players being replaced by people who are in over their heads — all reasons many family businesses do not make it to the next generation.

10. A declining market. Book stores, music stores, printing businesses and many others are dealing with changes in technology, consumer demand, and competition from huge companies with more buying power and advertising dollars.

In life, you may have forgiving friends and relatives, but entrepreneurship is rarely forgiving. Eventually, everything shows up in the soup. If people don’t like the soup, employees stop working for you, and customers stop doing business with you. And that is why businesses fail.

Fail State October 13, 2010

1) “State failure” is leading to confused policy making.

For example, it is causing the military to attempt overly ambitious nation-building and development to approach counter-terrorism, under the unproven assumption that “failed states” produce terrorism.

2) “State failure” has failed to produce any useful academic research in economics.

You would expect a major concept to be the subject of research by economists (as well as by other fields, but I am using economics research as an indicator). While there has been research on state failure, it failed to generate any quality academic publications in economics. A search of the top economics journals1 reveals that “state failure” (and all related variants like “failed states”) has been mentioned only once EVER. And this article mentions the concept only in passing.2

3) “State failure” has no coherent definition.

Different sources have included the following:

a) “Civil war”
b) “infant mortality”
c) “declining levels of GDP per capita”
d) “inflation” 3
e) “unable to provide basic services”
f) “state policies and institutions are weak”
g) “corruption”
h) “lack accountability” 4
i) “unwilling to adequately assure the provision of security and basic services to significant portions of their populations” 5 (wouldn’t this include the US?)
j) “inability to collect taxes”
k) “group-based inequality… and environmental decay.” 6
l) “wars and other disasters”
m) “citizens vulnerable to a whole range of shocks” 7

Most of these concepts are clear enough in themselves, and often apply to a large number of countries. But is there any good reason to combine them with arbitrary weights to get some completely unclear concept for a smaller number of countries? “State failure” is like a destructive idea machine that turns individually clear concepts into an aggregate unclear concept.

4) The only possible meaningful definition adds nothing new to our understanding of state behavior, and is not really measurable.

A more narrow definition of “state failure” is: a loss of the monopoly of force, or the inability to control national territory. Unfortunately this is impossible to measure: how do you know when a state has control? The only data I have been able to find that might help comes from the Polity research project that classifies the history of states as democracies or autocracies. 8 It describes “interregnums” that sound like the narrow “state failure” idea:

A “-77″ code for the Polity component variables indicates periods of periods of “interregnum,” during which there is a complete collapse of central political authority. This is most likely to occur during periods of internal war.

If interregnums are indeed a good measure, the data show that “state failure” is primarily just an indicator of war. As the data show, the rate of “state failure” in the 20th century spiked in the two World Wars, and then increased again (but not as much) after decolonization, again almost always associated with wars.

Even this measure does not really capture the narrow definition. Many countries were often created as “states” by colonial powers rather than following any natural state-building process in which states gain more and more control of territory. Almost all ex-colonies fail to control national territory after independence, and many still do not do so today – many more than the usual number of “failed states.” (Africa being the most striking example as exposited in the great book by Herbst, States and Power in Africa. 4)

Hence, if we use the measure described above, than state failure is just synonymous with war, and if we don’t (as we probably shouldn’t), then “state failure” is something more common and harder to measure than the current policy discussion recognizes.

5)  “State failure” appeared for political reasons.

The real genesis of the “state failure” concept was a CIA State Failure Task Force in the early 1990s. Their 1995 first report said state failure is “a new term for a type of serious political crisis exemplified by recent events in Somalia, Bosnia, Liberia, and Afghanistan.” All four involved civil war, confirming the above point that  “state failure” often just measures “war.” And we have just seen from the data (and common sense about decolonization) that either the claim of “newness” is false, or we are still not sure what “state failure” means.

Nevertheless, “state failure” became a hot idea in policy circles.  If we use the number of articles in Foreign Affairs mentioning “state failure” or variants, then it first appeared around the same time as the CIA task force, and then really took off after 9/11.

One can only speculate about the political motives for inventing an incoherent concept like “state failure.” It gave Western states (most notably the US superpower) much more flexibility to intervene where they wanted to (for other reasons): you don’t have to respect state sovereignty if there is no state. After the end of the Cold War, there was less hesitation to intervene because of the disappearance of the threat of Soviet retaliation. “State failure” was even more useful as justification for the US to operate with a free hand internationally in the “War on Terror” after 9/11.

These political motives are perfectly understandable, but they don’t justify shoddy analysis using such an undefinable concept.

It’s time to declare “failed state” a “failed concept.”

stupidity a sin? August 9, 2010

Is stupidity a sin?

I have often wondered about stupidity. It seems to me that stupid people spend a lot of time, well, doing stupid things. So, I guess the question is, do stupid people do stupid things, or does doing stupid things make a person stupid? Perhaps, merely doing stupid things rather than doing things to enhance our wisdom causes stupidity?

The Bible doesn’t use the word “stupid” but there are 66 instances of the word “fool” and 52 instances of the word “foolish” in the Bible.

What is stupidity, or foolishness? First we must decide whether we are going to use God’s definition of foolish or man’s. I think a quick look around will provide enough evidence that God’s definition of what is foolish will give us superior results.

If one is stupid, does one have to remain stupid?   NO!

(Psalm 73:22 – I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.)

How can we determine what stupidity is? Forest Gump’s mother would say – “Stupid is, as stupid does.”

Psalm 74:18 says – “Remember how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name.”

Mocking and reviling and blaspheming God’s name is stupid, and is an activity that stupid people do. One might wonder then, so many so-called “liberal” theologians spend their entire careers contradicting and blaspheming God?  In fact, one of Barna’s recent surveys state that only about half of all the ministers in Christianity even have a Biblical world view. In other words, they themselves, contradict the words of the Bible, which means that they contradict God’s Word!

Do these worldly experts know the right path to heaven?

Isn’t that stupid? Yet, we (they), the so-called Christians that attend these churches, and support these false teachers provide them a means to deceive, and a mechanism, and the television studios to spread their blasphemy, AND we (they) pay for it!

Matthew 7:26,27 says – “But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

How many liberal theologians, that contradict the words of the Bible, are we willing to tolerate? How many stupid people are we willing to listen to? Jesus said that anyone that hears His words but that does’t put them into practice is a foolish (stupid) man, and that their theology doesn’t have a good foundation.

Matthew 25 says that stupid people don’t prepare for their heavenly future. After being frustrated daily by stupid people, I’m excited by the aspect that heaven won’t be populated by stupid people! That one fact should make heaven attractive. It sure does for me!

Matthew 25:1-10
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

Romans 10:19 says that there can be stupid “nations”. I guess that would mean that if a nation that has more stupid people than wise people would make a nation stupid. Are WE a stupid nation? It sure looks like it many times! I think that many of the stupid we have leading us astray are doing so because they truly believe that they are doing good, it’s just that they don’t understand what stupid is.

The movie industry has just come up with a new (stupid) rating which will warn parents of incidents in a movie that portray Christianity is a positive light! Parents are not warned of homosexuality that is portrayed in a positive light. Parents are not warned of incidents where Christianity is portrayed in a negative light. Weird huh? Stupid huh?

1 Corinthians 1:18-21
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Jesus said that the world’s version of wisdom is stupidity, and those true, Bible believing Christians, are truly the wise in God’s sight. Modern philosophy, most of Academia, and most of the popular culture reject those things that are considered “Christian”. Apparently God sees things differently, in fact, in direct opposition to those views.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Obviously by the words in 1 Corinthians, it is NOT the strong, the rich, the powerful, the wise-in-the-eyes-of-the-world that are the truly wise. God does not choose the same people to do His work as the world does. This is one reason that the world is so messed up right now.

One of my favorite lines in Fiddler on the Roof is when Tevia is dancing in the barn singing “If I were a rich man”. One of his greatest wishes is that he would have time to study the Word more. Then he makes an interesting statement. He says that since he is now rich, that when he speaks, that people will think that he really knows what he is talking about BECAUSE he is rich.

Do we do that? Absolutely!

I remember visiting a church in East Anchorage a while back. I sat in the back, with a fairly new pair of 501 jeans on, a Norwegian hunting jacket, expensive hiking boots, and a pretty normal shirt on. I wasn’t there even five minutes when this older guy sat down next to me and informed me that they had a clothing bank downstairs and that I could go there on Saturdays (or Wednesdays… I can’t remember) and that they “wouldn’t even ask my name or anything”.

Here I am, sitting in his church by choice, but his entire preoccupation was in getting me to wear the church “uniform” so that I could fit in. I guess that getting me into a suit seemed too huge of a feat in a single encounter, so he was willing to just go for the Dockers or the Wallmart slacks. I have seen this same type of thought pattern repeated all over this country, in all different kinds of churches. Notice I am writing “churches” rather than “Churches”.

James 2:1-4 Dear brothers, how can you claim that you belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, if you show favoritism to rich people and look down on poor people? If a man comes into your church dressed in expensive clothes and with valuable gold rings on his fingers, and at the same moment another man comes in who is poor and dressed in threadbare clothes, and you make a lot of fuss over the rich man and give him the best seat in the house and say to the poor man, “You can stand over there if you like or else sit on the floor”—well, judging a man by his wealth shows that you are guided by wrong motives.

This type of stupidity comes from using the world’s measure rather than God’s measure. Many in the “Church” wonder what is going on in “churches”, because it completely contradicts what the Bible teaches.

No wonder so many people are confused when they attend church. False ministers keep telling them the opposite of the truth, and then contradict the Bible with their actions!

Why do we require those attending church to dress in the clothes of worldly success, or worldly wisdom, or worldly “business” clothes? Most of the people attending church are not business people. Many people don’t dress like that on a daily basis. I have always wondered if they think that God can’t see them any other time, when they are not in church. Their behavior often times reflects this idea!

This is a simple case of the blind leading the blind!

The Bible calls the Galatians stupid.

The Bible also calls the Ephesians stupid.

Worshiping rats is stupid!
1 Timothy 6:9 says that people that are seeking to get rich are subject to temptations, and that they have stupid and harmful desires that trap them in ruin and destruction.

Are people hopelessly trapped in their stupidity? NO!

Titus 3:3-7 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

One of the most controversial doctrines in the Bible is whether people can lose their salvation. Some say yes, some say no. Well, if the Bible says that it is stupid not to obey the Words of Jesus, which would necessarily make them a Christian, I wonder if those that say Christians can’t lose their salvation also say that Christians can’t be stupid. That position is pretty self contradicting.

So, what do we do about stupid people? 1 Peter 2:13-17 gives us some great advice. We should submit ourselves to governmental authority, we should support the punishment of those who do wrong, we should commend those who do right, and that these actions will silence the voices of stupid people. We should live in freedom, but our freedom shouldn’t hide evil actions, and we should show proper respect to everyone. Finally, we should love other believers (Christians), and we should fear God and honor the king.

Should we call what is stupid good, just to get along? Absolutely NOT!

1 Peter 2:13-17
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

What about so-called “Christians” that tell us to do really stupid things?
You know… like stealing?

Is stupidity a sin? Absolutely!
Amen, Franz Sigel Shroy
