No Deal: Senator McCain and his advisers, who last Wednesday had warned that this nation would be in the midst of another Great Depression by today unless Congress passed bailout legislation…This morning, claiming credit for building a winning coalition of votes in the House to pass that bailout bill and, thus, save the American economy. Only one problem: The bailout bill failing in the House when 67% of Republicans voted against it… And the stock market promptly losing seven percent of its value. Senator McCain — in our fifth story on the Countdown — having led his party and his country… to Congressional chaos and an economy in crisis. Mission Accomplished!
Krugman is here: Writing on his blog for the New York Times this afternoon, columnist Paul Krugman awarded the top headline to Market-Watch’s Rex Nutting: “House To Wall Street: Drop Dead.” But he also re-submitted his own writing after the first bailout deal collapsed last Thursday: “What we now have is non-functional government in the face of a major crisis, because Congress includes a quorum of crazies and nobody trusts the White House an inch. As a friend said last night, we’ve become a banana republic with nukes.” Our fourth story on the Countdown… what the quorum of crazies and the banana republic with nukes means for you…

How’s this for anecdotal evidence that the U.S. is going in the wrong direction? Today, I consulted Google Trends, hoping to discern from where in the world people are searching for “failure.” As it turns out, the Top 10 cities in terms of failure searches are all in the United States. As of this moment, Philadelphia is #1 (hardly a surprise, considering Philly’s fatalistic populace), with Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston and Dallas also in the Top 5, and Washington D.C., Seattle, Phoenix, Atlanta and San Diego rounding out the group.
I didn’t think much of this until I re-did the search, substituting success for “failure.” Interestingly, the first seven cities on the list are all outside the United States. As of this moment, Chennai (India) is #1, followed by Singapore, Mumbai (India), Delhi (India), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Vancouver and Hong Kong. Maybe those are all places where U.S. jobs are going? Or maybe people are simply feeling more successful over there.
Forgetting about success for a moment, it’s worth noting that at Failure we are currently updating our “This Day in (Failure) History” section. In the near future, all 365 days of the year—plus February 29—will be available via a searchable database. In the meantime, we’ve jury-rigged a Calendar page that contains links to all 365—er, 366—days worth of content, which had previously been available only a day at a time.
If you’re unfamiliar with “This Day in (Failure)” and you’d like to get a flavor for what it’s all about, I recommend checking out one or more of the following days:
January 25
February 11
February 23
April 11
August 12
September 15
September 30
October 14
November 3
November 28
I think you’ll agree that “This Day in (Failure)” is a bit more intriguing than the typical “today in history” or “on this day” fare, and sometimes considerably more offbeat. For your convenience, we’ve also included a Google search box at the bottom of each “This Day …” page, so you can quickly and easily search for further information about any individual failure that happens to pique your interest.
